Sadly, my problem

Today, October 2nd, a Sunday of rain and broken branches and leaf-clogged drains and slick streets, it stopped, and summer was gone.
A. Bartlett Giamatti, The Green Fields of the Mind
It's a strange coincidence that Giamatti's line describes this Sunday in Seattle so well. Mariners are down to their last outs, the streets are slopped with twigs and leaves, and it is self-evident that the rainy season and its oyster grey clouds of depression has arrived.

Where have I been lately? Work. Since I don't talk about work on this blog, I will not give out the details, but here is the grand, vague summary: A project which I am tangentally attached to is now six weeks behind schedule, despite the deadline being known for more than a year. It's a lynchpin project that has to happen, or else. I've been doing a lot of editing, stat compilation, and cat herding. The stress is enormous, and it will not be fully completed until the rainy season winds up.

And the season is over for the M's as Sexson strikes out. Now come the playoffs, now I turn my attention more fully towards college football and the surprisingly scrappy Buffs.

But the cold is starting to seep in. I am holding off on the heat because of the more-expensive-than-milk price of heating oil.

  1. Sorry to hear about your project, and the M's, and the weather in Seattle.

There was a time when electric heating was too expensive, but I might recommend getting a small electric, oil-filled radiator for a room you use frequently? They are reasonably efficient and don't seem to dry out the air as badly as fan-and-heating-coil space heaters. My fiancee has one and absolutely loves it.
